The WHO designated B.1.1529 as a ‘variant of concern’ on Friday. Meanwhile, concerns over the new variant has triggered widespread travel bans with the European Union, the US, Canada, Saudi Arabia joining list of countries restricting travel from South Africa.
Amid rising concern over the B.1.1529 variant of coronavirus, Professor Gagandeep Kang told India Today that the new variant could be more transmissible and could escape immunity. The B.1.1529 variant of SARS-CoV-2 was first detected in Africa’s Botswana.
